ORGANIC MUSHROOM CERTIFICATION
Want Your Mushrooms Certified Organic?
What We Do for Mushroom Growers
Mushrooms can be certified organic, but the rules fit them in their own way. We help you with substrate, spawn, and records, so your plan matches how you grow.

Substrate and Spawn
Where your sawdust, straw, grain, and spawn come from, and proof that each one fits the organic rules.

Your Grow Space
Cleaning steps, pest control, and what touches your mushrooms, all written into your plan.

Harvest and Sales
Simple logs that tie every sale back to a batch, ready for your inspector.
Why Mushroom Growers Choose Kona Organic
Mushroom farms do not look like other farms, and many growers are not sure where to start. We make the plan fit your operation.

Indoor or Outdoor
Grow rooms, containers, or logs in the forest. We write the plan for the way you grow.

Inputs Checked
Supplements, sanitizers, and pest controls checked before you buy them.

Anywhere You Grow
We work with growers anywhere by video call and shared files.
Common Questions
Can mushrooms be certified organic?
Yes. Mushrooms are certified under the USDA organic crop rules. Your certifier reviews your substrate, spawn, and growing practices.
Does my substrate have to be organic?
Farm materials like straw and grain should be organic when you can get them. Wood and sawdust must not be treated with prohibited substances. We help you document each source.
Do I need organic spawn?
Use organic spawn when it is available. If you cannot find it, keep notes that show you looked. We help you document your search.
Does the 36 month rule apply to mushrooms?
It applies to land. Mushrooms grown indoors on substrate are not grown in soil, so your certifier looks at your materials and practices. Outdoor logs and beds can be treated differently, so ask us about your setup.
Can I sell foraged mushrooms as organic?
Wild mushrooms can be certified under the wild crop rules. The area must have had no prohibited substances for three years, and the harvest must not harm the land.
Do you work with growers outside Hawaiʻi?
Yes. We work with mushroom growers anywhere by video call and shared files.
Substrate and Spawn
Your certifier will ask where each one comes from and what is in it. Wood, straw, grain, and supplements all get checked, and logs and wood must not be treated with prohibited substances.
Grow Room Cleaning
Cleaners and sanitizers have to be allowed, and you log what you used and when.
Rules Written for Mushrooms
The USDA has added organic rules written just for mushrooms. We check your substrate, spawn, and records against them.
Who this is for
Indoor and outdoor mushroom growers, from small log yards to grow rooms.
When to call us
Call before you order substrate and spawn. What goes into the block decides whether the mushrooms can be organic.
Our conflict of interest policy is simple: we never inspect an operation we consult for, and your certifier always makes the certification decision. Book a consultation to talk through where your operation stands and what it needs.
